Tahoe Bike Trail

I've never been one to follow the crowd.  Most of my life has been spent trying to find ways to avoid masses of people.  I don't like Disney Land, I don't go to the beach on the 4th of July and you will never see me in Tahoe on Memorial Day weekend.  But this year was a little different.

We decided to stay home this weekend to put a dent in the numerous personal projects that have been slowly piling up over the past couple of years.  On Thursday night we put together long lists of what we would accomplish over the long weekend.  Considering our need to recreate, we decided it would be best if we each spent Saturday doing what we loved best, (read fishing for John and biking for me) before hitting the list hard on Sunday.

I surprised myself by deciding to take a ride along the Tahoe Bike Trail - not my usual ammo, particular on a holiday weekend.  My best friend and I threw the bikes int he back of her truck and drove to Sugar Pine Point on Tahoe's west shore.  I was pleasantly surprised by the lack of traffic on the way up from Shingle Springs.  When we arrived, there were only 3 other cars in the daily parking spot, which really amazed us being a holiday weekend an all.

Despite the trail being paved, I brought my mountain bike to make sure I took full advantage of the workout given the lists that awaited me at home.  We headed north along the west shore and could not believe the lack of cars and people.  We came across an occasional walker or biker on the trail, but it was otherwise deserted all the way into Tahoe City.  It was there that I couldn't believe my eyes.  Where were all the people who cram into the parking lots where you put in to raft the Truckee River?  Where were the miles of backed up traffic into and out of Tahoe City?

We then took the bike trail from Tahoe City to Squaw Valley and began to see the first signs that it was a holiday weekend.  Although I wouldn't consider the trail crowded, there were a lot of people out enjoying the perfect sunny 72 degree day.  The trail follows the river, (and unfortunately HWY 89) all the way to Squaw, so it was beautiful, but a little noisy for my tastes.

It wasn't until we were back in the car and headed home that we found the crowds of people we expected to see all day gathered at Emerald Bay.  The typical person rarely goes beyond the major attractions to see what else there is to see.  Although I don't consider what we did at all on "the road less traveled", it was an enjoyable way to escape the valley heat and get in a new ride.

Round trip, I am guessing 24 - 26 miles which was a decent workout on a mountain bike at 6,000' elevation.  Positives were the lack of people from Sugar Pine Point to Tahoe City.  Negatives were that the trail crosses the main street along the west shore several times and that it travels along HWY 89 the entire time.  Not my cup of tea, but one that any family can enjoy together as a 'get outside and get going' outing.

Remodeling Likely to Trump Selling in 2014

This Houzz article is long, but good reading that talks about why more than half of all homeowners will remodel in the next couple of years.  I guess I really enjoyed the research because it struck home with me.

My husband says that my job costs us money because truthfully, after spending all day every day looking at houses, it's tough to come home and not be critical of your own home.  I'm very thankful for what we have, but a house tends to take a beating after raising 3 children over 18 years.   The reality is that our house was definitely in need of some "spiffing up".  

Since becoming an empty nester last fall, we have had the house painted inside, done three bathroom remodels, installed a new cook top, bought new shades and will shortly be installing a whole house fan and new closet organizer.  All of these things should add value to the house but like the article says, until we find that perfect home to downsize to, I'll be enjoying what I have.

Hidden Treasure at Hidden Falls in Auburn California

I began hearing about Hidden Falls after joining the Hammerin' Wheels Mountain Bike Club.  I've seen several rides posted but being the intermediate MTN Bike rider that I am, I like to check routes out on foot before committing to a public display of my mediocrity.  The perfect opportunity to do so presented itself on Sunday, Mother's Day.  We had already decided on a family hike but the location had not been determined.  With inclement weather forecast in the high country, I chose Hidden Falls for it's relatively close proximity to Shingle Springs, (a little over an hour) and it's low elevation, (around 1,000').



Although the park was crowded when we arrived, we soon snagged a parking spot and checked out the  well documented trail map.  We were all pleasantly surprised to find such a wide variety of trails available.  You can find the map below at Hidden Falls Trail Map


Our party wanted desperately to escape the crowds and take a longer hike, so we chose to begin our trek along the South Legacy Way Trail.  It only took about 1/2 mile before we lost all sight of other people and seemed to have the rest of the day to ourselves wandering aimlessly through the park.  With unlimited options in this 1200 acre park, we hiked an estimated 8 - 9 miles out of the 30 miles of trails available in and around both sides of Coon Creek.  Along the mostly shady oak studded riparian route we saw a variety of wild flowers and water features, including the 30' "Hidden" waterfall.

Overall it was a great way to spend Mother's Day and I'll be going back, on my MTN bike next time!

Santa Cruz - Quick Two Day Get Away

The best part about living in Shingle Springs is the proximity to major vacation spots.  I write a lot about recreating in El Dorado County because I live here and because it's challenging to link together more than a few hours of play time together at any one time.  But if you can plan ahead, like we did to take advantage of a Travel Zoo voucher, you can get in two full days of fun in Santa Cruz.

We left early on Friday morning and within 3 hours were at the beach.  We went straight to Wilder Ranch, which is just a few miles north of downtown.  Here we saddled up and went on a really fun mountain bike ride along the coast.  The trail follows the shoreline for about 5 miles north and has beautiful views of the private beaches below the headlands.


We traveled through fields of artichokes, not stealing a single one I might add and 


...and just basically enjoyed the relatively flat open road above the cliffs.


The ride was a perfect welcome on a warm spring day.

Around 5:00 we arrived at the Chaminade, a nice resort among a eucalyptus grove.  Dinner in their restaurant was reasonable and delicious, (although I was surprised to not see more seafood on the menu).  I had the mahi mahi fish tacos which was excellent!  After dinner, we hit Marianne's Ice Cream at 1020 Ocean St.  I had the best hot fudge sundae of my life with one scoop of peanut butter cup and another of kahlua ice cream.  I hardly ever splurge on calories like this, but hey - I earned it today.

On Saturday we had brunch at The Santa Cruz Diner on 909 Ocean Street.  I love these types of greasy all-day breakfast joints.  For $9.00 I ordered a custom 3 egg omlette with mushrooms, spinach and jack.  

Feeling a wee bit guilty over desert last night and a (probably) 1000 calorie breakfast, we went straight to Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park.  A quick stop in the ranger station sold us on a 3 hour wild flower hike outside to the tourist-packed Loop Trail.  It was enjoyable, challenging and had rewarding peeks at the ocean from high above in the mountains.



All in all, it was a fantastic 2 day get away.  Pretty inexpensive, great food, fun recreating and just plain nice to get out of Dodge.
