Two Very Different 6 Mile Experiences On The El Dorado Trail

I took away a homework assignment from the SPTC Committee meeting in August to hike a 3 mile section of the El Dorado Trail from the Y in El Dorado to Missouri Flat Road.  The purpose was to identify any areas of concern for for hikers, bikers and horseback riders to use the trail safely.  So we headed out on Sunday morning for a stroll along the tracks to document this section.  We saw a few things that could be improved, but mostly we saw a resource that will become better and better with use. The most interesting finding was that there are absolutely no people out there using this section.  I wouldn't call it the most scenic place I've ever been, but it is definitely a place to explore passing by the historic train station in El Dorado and winding through rural homesteads.  I was very disappointed to see so much dumping and trash along the way.  We were on a mission so it only took us 2 hours to hike the 6 miles beginning from the Front Yard Nursery to Walmart.

This morning I had an early morning meeting in Placerville so I decided to combine it with a 6 mile run along the paved section of the El Dorado Trail beginning at Forni Road just past Thompson's Toyota and ending at Missouri Flat.  I've done this section many times before but the difference between this section and the one we did on Sunday was so drastic that I just had to write about it.  Although these sections are just across the street, (Missouri Flat) from each other, they couldn't be more different.  This section is also about 3 miles each way but it is paved and therefore USED.  There are always tons of people out there walking with dogs, biking, riding horses and running.  There are parking areas and porta-potties on each end and improvements along the way like benches, trash receptacles and developed areas to increase your strength and cardio.  Plus this section has more beautiful scenery like the bridge over Weber Creek!  This section is also very clean.  No dumped mattresses, old washers and dryers, over-turned cars covered in vines or trash of any kind.  It took me less than an hour to run the 6 miles.

Feeling safe isn't usually an issue for me because I almost always prefer to be away from people while recreating. But until some improvements are made to the section between the Y and Walmart, I won't be going it alone out there.

Tahoe Rim Trail

On Sunday we decided to go to South Lake Tahoe to check on the progress of an exterior painting project.  It's a good thing we did because the inspection prompted a call to the painter, who was doing a less than thorough job!  I don't like to think that a contractor would take advantage of an out of town owner, but the quality of workmanship was less than satisfactory.  You'd think that a contractor, who is hired by a realtor, would make a special effort to do a good job in the hopes of being put on my preferred vendor list and referred to my clients.   But I must say that he made it right and my day improved with an epic day shared with my husband.

We decided to take the Heavenly gondola to the top of the mountain and hike around, which anyone can do for a modest price.  We ride it free since we have season passes for the ski season.  There were tons of people around the Tamarack Lodge having lunch and riding in the tubing park.  We decided to take a ride on the Tamarack Express chair lift.  When we arrived at the top we began our hike.  Within 100 yards, we were approached by a patroller on a quad indicating that the hiking trails were closed due to the possibility of lightening.  We were forced to take the chair lift back down to the Tamarack Lodge.  We felt like tapped animals with ropes closing off any possible adventure into the woods.  Needless to say, the day hadn't started out great.

But in John and Joy style, we 'cut the line' and headed down the mountain.  We spent the next 4 hours walking straight down the face of Heavenly.  It was a day well spent with nature.  We had unbelievable views of Lake Tahoe the entire way down and enjoyed learning about possible out-of-bound ski stashes.  Much of the day was spent exploring the "Burn" area and planning our descents this winter on skis.

The best surprise came as we neared the end of the day.  Just as our knees were about to give out, we came upon a section of the Tahoe Rim Trail.  For those of you who don't know what this is, it's a 165 mile multi-use trail (mountain biking, hiking and horseback riding) that goes all the way around Lake Tahoe.  http://www.tahoerimtrail.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=363&Itemid=202.  The section we stumbled across goes from Kinsbury Grade to Big Meadow.  This relatively flat section along the base of Heavenly and above the lake was the perfect end to the day.  I likened it a run out at the end of a bump run.  An opportunity for your legs to recover while still enjoying the ride after a strenuous run.  We easily followed trail out to the parking lot behind Harrah's where we started the day.

If you know contractors on the west slope of the Sierras who would be interested in getting on my preferred vendor list, please have them give me a call.  I am always looking for reasonable, reliable, licensed and honest professionals for my clients.

Desolation Wilderness - Always Be Prepared

I love to share my wanderings in El Dorado County.  This week's adventure was a day hike to Desolation Wilderness to explore the granite peaks and lakes above Echo Lake.  We parked at Echo Lake and paid $12.00 to take the boat taxi out to the trail head to Lake of the Woods.  It was a pretty gentle 3 mile ascent to Lake of the Woods.  If you only go this far, it's worth it.  This lake is stunning with Pyramid Peak as a back drop.

From here we headed south and then west to where we could see both Ropi and Pyramid Lake.  We opted to skip the descent to Ropi Lake so we climbed down the granite field to Pyramid Lake where we stopped for a quick lunch.  We began to notice that storm clouds were building to the north, which was unfortunately where we were heading, but decided that we didn't want to turn back.  So with a quick check of the map, we worked our way back up the granite shelf towards Aloha Lake.  By the time we got to Channel Lake we were hearing a lot of thunder so we pushed on, but not before taking this picture of Cracked Crag in the distance.

Just after we left Channel Lake, we began to see lightening flashes and it began to rain.  Within just a few short minutes the temperature dropped and it began to hail so we changed from summer hiking gear into poly pro and put on our gortex jackets, (a lesson in being well prepared).  Luckily our common sense won out and we opted out of the short trek to Aloha Lake because the storm hit in full force.  As we began our descent back to Echo Lake, the trail turned into a creek, the thunder and lightening got closer and we took cover from time to time to catch our breath.  We made it back to Echo Lake without incident and by then the storm had blown over.  We felt so good, we decided to skip the taxi and walk the extra 3 miles back to the car.  In total, we figured this was about 12 - 14 miles over 7 hours.

Lessons: Always listen to your instincts, carry extra clothes and make sure you have a map, compass, headlamp, matches and extra food.  We didn't need all of this, but we very well could have!

California Fire Prevention Fee Coming.

Thank you to Jessica Mraz for the following information.  I just checked the link to the map and my house is in the SRA zone.  Is yours?

Property owners within the State Responsibility Area (SRA) will soon be receiving a bill requiring payment up to $150 per habitable structure for state fire prevention services.

In July of 2011, the Governor signed legislation (ABX1 29) requiring affected property owners to pay a fee for state fire prevention services in their area. The fee is applied to all habitable structures within the SRA.
The SRA is the area of the state where the State of California is financially responsible for the prevention and suppression of wildfires.  SRA does not include lands within city boundaries or in federal ownership. To see if your property is within the SRA, use the State Responsibility Area Viewer website:
http://www.firepreventionfee.org/sraviewer.php
The fee is levied at the rate of $150 per habitable structure, which is defined as a building that can be occupied for residential use. Owners of habitable structures who are also within the boundaries of a local fire protection agency will receive a reduction of $35 per habitable structure.
This fee will fund a variety of important fire prevention services within the SRA including brush clearance and activities to improve forest health so the forest can better withstand wildfire.
Note: The transfer of title does not trigger the fee.  The notice of the Fire Prevention Fee has been included in Disclosure Source NHD Reports since September 2011.

Mental Health Facilities Moving to Shingle Springs?

The following comments about the possible relocation of mental health facilities to Shingle Springs came to my attention this morning.  What are your thoughts?

The County has confirmed that it is considering moving the Placerville Mental Health facilities. An empty building near Lees' Feed in Shingle Springs is one of the locations being considered. Any decision will be put on the agenda for a Board of Supervisors public hearing for the public to make comment.
If you would like to voice your concerns now rather than waiting for a public hearing, please email them to:
bosone@edcgov.us, bostwo@edcgov.us, bosthree@edcgov.us, bosfour@edcgov.us, bosfive@edcgov.us
Or you can mail them to: Board of Supervisors, 330 Fair Lane, Building A, Placerville, CA 95667
Some concerns that have been brought to our attention are:

*       Inadequate public transportation serving that location.
*       The close proximity to Ponderosa High School, Buckeye Elementary
School, Bradford Park, The El Dorado Trail, the railroad depot, and nearby residences.
*       The burden of supporting another public service in addition to the
Probation Department which recently opened on Durock Road and the low-income/mental health housing which is currently under construction on Sunset Lane behind Lees' Feed.
*       This type of facility is usually located near medical facilities or
government centers with compatible, supportive services.
Please share this information with anyone else that you feel may be concerned about the Mental Health facilities possibly relocating to Shingle Springs.
Reminder: Supervisor Ron Briggs, District IV, represents Shingle Springs north of Highway 50. Supervisor Ray Nutting, District II, represents Shingle Springs south of Highway 50.
Information about the Placerville Mental Health facilities can be found at:

Is The Bay Area Driving The Sacramento Housing Market Again?

Here in Sacramento and El Dorado counties, we've been experiencing a rush in the low end of the real estate market for months.  Low inventory combined with low interest rates and low home prices have created a market like we haven't seen since the early to mid 2000's.  We are back to multiple offers being the norm again and a shift has occurred to more of a seller's market.  As you can see from the graph below, more homes are going pending and selling than are coming on the market in Sacramento county.

Until very recently, the same couldn't be said about higher end homes. But things have changed here almost like a light switch going on.   All of a sudden the higher end homes are going under contract like hot cakes.  As seen below in a graph of El Dorado County homes over $700K, inventory has been reduced form 60+ months to 16 months since October of 2011.

But who is buying all these homes? Based upon my own experience, it is Bay area residents who are leaving and once again driving our market.  Home prices in the bay have picked up so people are getting out and coming to settle in our wonderful area that is so close to world class recreation, great schools, low crime, and in general just a great quality of life.

If you know of anyone who is considering relocating here, please pass my name along.  I have a passion for our area and love to show it off.

Smith Lake - Extra Fun 1/2 Day Hike!

How many times have you been up to Wright's Lake?  I've been there several times because it's an easy place to get away to for a day hike.  It's only about an hour away off of HWY 50.  We used to go there when the kids were small because there's a fun hike that even small children can do out to the Emerald Pools.  I've also hiked up to Twin Lakes a few times which is probably the most popular hike in the area.  Where I hadn't been until last week, was the hike to Smith Lake.  It's not a long hike, but it has a strenuous elevation gain, (up to 9,000') so it gets your heart pumping in a short distance.

You begin at the trail head for Twin Lakes and basically take every right fork possible in the trail.  It's well marked with signs to Grouse and Smith Lakes, but for some reason nobody goes here.  In about an hour you come to Grouse Lake which is a beautiful lake surrounded by pines.

We took a break here to rehydrate and to have a snack.  There wasn't another soul to be seen (or heard).  It's a great place to meditate since all you here is the sounds of birds and wind through the trees.

From here we pushed on past Hemlock Lake which is another high altitude lake along the way to the granite steps leading up to Smith Lake.  We were huffing and puffing the whole way but the reward was worth it.

The water is aqua blue and there were trout swimming around in this relatively shallow lake which was way warmer than we expected.  We had this spectacular place to ourselves to enjoy a dip and lunch.

In total, it took about 2 hours to get to Smith Lake and 1 1/2 hours to get back down. The rewards are well worth it with  exercise in the out of doors, (my favorite and only kind of exercise) clear blue skies, great smells, beautiful views of the western valley including Wrights Lake, Union Valley Reservoir and the Sierra Nevada foothills and best of all no one else around!
