Mating Rattlesnakes

While on the subject of Wildlife in Shingle Springs, I wanted to share this short video of 2 mating rattlesnakes because I had mentioned it in my Sugarloaf Mountain story.  This was taken with my camera and it was not on zoom.  We were only a few away from these guys and our presence didn't bother them one bit!  Although I only filmed for a few seconds, this display went on for quite a while.  In fact, we got bored of watching and moved on before they were finished.

Seeing rattlesnakes is unexpected because we actually hired a professional rattlesnake removal company to humanely relocate any of these creatures from our property.  They spent a day searching the property in 2004 and didn't find a single snake so imagine our shock when we came upon this site on a family hike in the spring of 2010.

Eagles in Shingle Springs California?

John and I saw the most amazing event on our way home today.  While driving up our street, we saw what we thought was a vulture eating some road kill, not unusual.  We slowed down and discovered that it was an eagle, (either a gold or young bald) on top of a living turkey.  I jumped out of the car and the eagle flew into a tree nearby tree ~ pictured.  He was not happy that we had interrupted his progress.  The turkey jumped up and started running around with most of it's feathers plucked! When the turkey was out of harms way, the eagle flew away.  I didn't even know there were eagles around here!   I've been fortunate to see eagles in the wild at Lake Shasta, CA and also in Homer, Alaska, but never here in Shingle Springs.   It was comforting to know that we saved the turkey but I don't think it will ever be able to fly over a fence or even roost again because of the loss of feathers.  I hope it will be able to survive the many ground predators around here without the jump/flight function.

Shingle Springs is a wonderful place to live and is always full of natural surprises.  Despite it's close proximity to urban sprawl, we are always shocked when we witness first hand, the bounty of wildlife.  We see deer, quail, owls, foxes, rattlesnakes, turkeys and coyotes all the time, but I was most shocked when I saw my first mountain lion here and now this eagle.  Animals are always fearful and they usually try to hide from humans which is why I am never fearful living here.  I feel fortunate to live in such a special place where we coexist with nature.

Soaring student loan debt to delay homeownership, boost rentals

Investing in rental housing is something that everyone should be considering as a bright spot in this economy.  Low housing prices combined with strong rental data, such as found in the attached article, combine to create real upside for investors.

"Student loans are going to be yet another hurdle for the housing market to overcome. Faced with mounting student loan debt, poor job prospects and stagnant wages, an increasing amount of 25- to 34-year-olds (a prized demographic for the housing sector) have moved back in with their parents. Almost 6 million 25- to 34-year-olds now live with mom and dad, up 26 percent from when the recession started in 2007.
Today's 36.8 percent homeownership rate for 25- to 29-year-olds is at its lowest level since 1999, and homeownership for 30- to 34-year-olds is at its lowest rate in 17 years.
The good news is that this pent-up demand will ultimately provide a much needed boost to the housing sector. The bad news is that the boost will be heavily skewed to the rental market,"....................

Sugarloaf Mountain - A Study of an Emotional Buying Decision

I am an avid cyclist and for years, my husband and I have explored some of the most beautiful ranch land in the foothills of El Dorado County on our bikes.  One of our favorite areas is Brandon Road and the southern half of French Creek Road.  To the south and east of these roads are the incredibly wild and beautiful Big Canyon and Cosumnes River valleys.  Our favorite landmark on these rides was Sugarloaf Mountain, which is a 32 acre granite monadnock that sits high above the surrounding ranches and canyons and looks out in all directions to the Crystal Range of the Sierra Nevada, the Sutter Buttes, the Sacramento Valley, the intercoastal range and Mount Diablo.  We often dreamed of owning this mountain.
One day, while on our way to a hike, my best friend and I saw a newly placed 'For Sale' sign on Brandon Road.  I was hoping the sign was for Sugarloaf Mountain which sits back off the road so I called the realtor immediately and couldn't believe my luck.  This property, which had been in the same family since the original land grant by the US government in the 1800's, was for sale!  We put in an offer that day.
Over the years we've enjoyed exploring the mountain and all of its special natural features. Gorgeous wildflowers bloom from March through mid-June.  One year, we counted 59 different varieties of wildflowers!  These range from the common (though stunning) poppy, lupine, vetches and buttercups to the rare Japanese House flower and Ithuriel’s Spear, in the lily family.  It's got an old, scenic, unused railway around the base of the mountain.  These tracks are home to some of the most gorgeous wildflower displays I've ever seen.
There is a park-like woodland setting on the north side of the mountain that is dotted with 4 varieties of oak trees.  The canopy in this area is high which creates a shady retreat on hot summer days.  Just beyond the 'park' there is a large pine tree with several huge balls or clumps of pine needles.  They are green so we knew they were alive, and about 4 feet in diameter.  We couldn't imagine what these things were until one day we saw an owl come swooping out of its center.  We don't know if they made these nests, but a family of owls lives in them.
There is also a fern forest on the top of the mountain on the north side.  It looks like something that you would see in the Pacific Northwest or New England.  I've never seen ferns grow in this climate before.  We happened upon 2 rattlesnakes mating while on a family hike one spring.  Although it startled us at first, within minutes it seemed like the most natural thing in the world to be witnessing at that moment.   Our presence didn't bother them so we stayed and watched in awe while they danced and intertwined their bodies up to 2 feet off the ground.  Luckily, we’ve only seen 3 rattlesnakes in the 7 years we’ve owned Sugarloaf Mountain.
This is a truly stunning, “one of a kind”, property.  Unfortunately, we've decided that it's time to let it go for the right price.  We've got other projects to move on to so I created this website to advertise that Sugarloaf Mountain is "FOR SALE BY OWNER".
Please share this page with anyone who you think would appreciate this unique and historical property.
